It is I; do not be afraid

Matthew 14:22–36

Jesus sent the disciples ahead of him to cross the Sea of Galilee to Gennesaret. He spent time alone in prayer before walking on a wind-tossed sea to the disciples’ boat. They were terrified when they saw him, believing that they had seen a ghost. Jesus calmed them with the words, ‘Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid’. Peter’s entry into the stormy sea was no foolhardy venture of faith. He was beckoned by Jesus to walk on the water, and all was well until he saw the storm around him. Perhaps the reason his faith failed him was that he took his eyes off the Lord. Jesus heard his cry for help, took him by the hand, and as they got into the boat, the storm ceased. The amazed disciples knew that Jesus was no ordinary man. He is the Son of God who is worthy of our worship! The disciples had no need to fear when their Lord was with them, but, oh, the dullness and hardness of their hearts! They were greatly amazed at the demonstration of the Lord’s power over the sea, but hadn’t they already seen his divine power in multiplying the loaves and fish? Why should they fear when they had such a Saviour? Why should we fear? – ‘Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.’ When Jesus and the disciples landed on the shore of Gennesaret, they were soon surrounded by huge crowds seeking healing. Everyone who touched the hem of Jesus’ garment was healed. They too recognised that Jesus was no ordinary man. Have you experienced his power in your life, saving you from your sin and transforming you? Are you of good cheer because of what the Lord Jesus has done in you and through you? When we are going through difficulties, remember that the Lord Jesus is with you, and we don’t have to be afraid.

2Chronicles 7:14: “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land."
