Communicating the gospel in a “Noisy World”

Romans 10:14: How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? The risen Christ commands His followers to go into the world and preach the good news. The Lord is serious about outreach; so how do we fare in today’s “noisy world?” We live in a time when those in marketing and advertising talk about “a noisy environment”, meaning that we are exposed to an avalanche of information every minute of the day, whether it be by way of television or other media advertising, outdoor advertising, and advertisements we see when we access the internet. There are also those cell phone SMSs inviting us to buy products and services. The Gospel has a distinctive - advantage for unbelievers. The Bible is the most read communication tool the world has known, but how do we communicate the good news of the Gospel to the unsaved in this so called “noisy world?” In his book, Wisdom for Each Day, Billy Graham, says God is calling us to consider His call and to wrestle in prayer over the mission He has for us in life. Will you go into the world for Him? There are a thousand things you can do with your life, a thousand ways you can spend it – but how many of them will enable you to have no regrets at the end? Obedience to Jesus is the only path to no regrets, he adds. It all revolves around communication with the unbeliever, and there is the challenge to suburban congregations of the Christian church. The question is: are our opportunities of reaching out to non-believers restricted because we live and move about in an environment comprising Christians only? Another question: How do we communicate with non-believers, whether they are visitors during Sunday worship or people that we associate with during the week? If we associate, and communicate with non-believers, we would better be able to appreciate how they see the world and to understand their perceptions of the Gospel. Understanding the culture - the beliefs, customs, practices, and social behaviour of non-believers - is one of the reasons the early church was so successful at evangelism. They had a habit of getting into the mindset of pagans and Jews alike to transpose the gospel into the appropriate key. What does “getting into the mindset of non-Christians” look like for us today? The first step is figuring out how to escape our Christian ghettos. Living in the Christian subculture can make it difficult to know, much less engage, the non-Christians around us. Once you get to know people who don’t believe what you believe, you will have plenty of opportunities to transpose the Gospel into a cultural key. As we learn more about people’s objections to the Gospel, we gain insight in how to talk to them in ways that make sense. We can’t assume that people know what words like Christ, sin, faith, and God mean. For many, these words may no longer carry their original biblical meaning. This is yet another reminder that we need to listen and ask questions as a part of re-evangelization. If we are to move forward, the Church must develop its ability to listen to new questions people are asking and learn how to translate the language of the Gospel into words and concepts that speak to the heart. Good evangelists must slow down long enough to understand what people hear and how they speak to communicate the Gospel in intelligible ways. This involves listening to what people think to communicate meaningfully what God thinks. It involves listening to the questions people ask to ask good questions, the questions God asks each of us. People need to understand why the Gospel is worth believing. To get back to this “noisy world” we live in, slow down long enough to understand what people hear and how they speak to communicate the Gospel in intelligible ways. With God’s help, let’s tell others about Jesus.

There are vacancies at Barkly Highway State School and Mount Isa School of the Air. These can be 2 day positions up to 5-day combined positions. 

School Chaplains work within the schools alongside other support people like guidance counsellors, youth support co-ordinators and admin staff. They run programs like weekly Breakfast programs, 1^st break activities, Religious Instruction help, Mother's Day activities, Chappy lounge after school for staff and parent support options, Bella girls program for Year 10 girls, student council support and multicultural event support. On top of this, they may do 1 on 1 student support, sit in classrooms to assist teachers with hard classrooms, and more. They are Jesus to the school, in the most holistic sense of the word. A light in the schools, a faith-filled member who students, staff, and parents can all utilise when they need someone to talk to.
